Strong Operations Need Healthy Farmers

Farming asks a lot of you. Long days, unpredictable weather, markets, financial pressures and responsibility for your operation and family can add up. Stress is part of agriculture—but you don't have to handle all of it alone.

Catholic Charities provides confidential mental health counseling and substance use disorder outpatient services for farmers and their families. Services are available to people of all faiths and backgrounds, and no one is turned away because of an inability to pay.

Counseling Here Works Around the Farm

During the busy planting and harvest seasons, Catholic Charities offers extended telehealth hours, including early morning, evening and limited weekend appointments when regularly scheduled hours aren't possible.

You can talk with a licensed therapist from home, the tractor—or wherever you have a private place and an internet connection.

A Few Ways to Take Care of Yourself During Busy Seasons

Focus on what you can control. Put your energy toward the decisions you can make today.
Protect the basics. Healthy eating, drinking water, sleep and short breaks matter, especially during long stretches in the field.
Stay connected. Make time to check in with your spouse, family, friend, pastor or someone you trust.
Pay attention to changes. If stress isn't easing or you're no longer feeling like yourself, talking with a professional can help.

When Is Stress Becoming Too Much?

  • Worry that is difficult to shut off

  • Trouble sleeping or constant exhaustion

  • Increased frustration, anger or irritability

  • Losing interest in people or things you usually enjoy

  • Feeling overwhelmed, hopeless or unable to keep up

  • Increasing alcohol or substance use

  • Stress beginning to affect your health, relationships or daily life

Early intervention makes a difference. Don’t wait until things reach a crisis.
