What is EMDR?

What is

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy approach designed to help individuals process and heal from trauma and distressing life experiences. EMDR utilizes structured phases, including bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements), to support the brain’s natural ability to reprocess traumatic memories and reduce their emotional intensity.

How does EMDR work?

EMDR is an eight-phase, structured therapy approach that helps individuals reprocess traumatic memories so they no longer cause emotional distress. During an EMDR session, a trained therapist guides the client through bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping or auditory cues) while recalling distressing memories in a safe, controlled environment. This process allows the brain to integrate these memories in a healthier way, reducing emotional triggers and promoting healing.
